What Happens at La Tomatina?
On last Wednesday of August, around 11 am many trucks show up at Plaza del Pueblo, right in the center of town. The tomatoes arrive from Extremadura, where they are less costly. Festival starts when a brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story high, greased-up timber pole and reached the ham at the top. As nobody can reach the meaty point, the festival starts after a while. The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it starts, the battle is usually every man for himself.
The cleansing process
After a one hour, the fighting ends, you cannot throw a tomato at this time. The cleaning process involves fire extinguishers truck running down on streets. Water is provided from a Roman aqueduct. The authorities seem to be much more worried about the cleaning of the town rather cleaning of the visitors. Some kind residents will rinse passerby. Once the tomato flesh is flushed, the ground is clean due to the acidity of the tomato.
